Gillingham are just days away from the start of the season but the injury to Adam Birchall has left a niggling doubt about where the goals will come from.

The Gills have already lost their top four goalscorers from last season and the injury to Birchall has left the Gills seriously light up-front.

Hessenthaler has scrapped his attempts to bring in a new coach and wisely decided to invest the money in another striker, or possibly two. Southend trialist Matt Paterson has already departed, having failed to impress sufficiently.
