Low sun may have blinded driver, inquest told

A policeman has told how he was dazzled by the low sun as he drove to a crash scene just before last Christmas.

PC David Kirk was hurrying to investigate how an elderly local woman driver had been badly injured.

June Wilkinson, 76, of Hartley, later died in a London hospital from her injuries.

Her car had been struck by another driven by William Wilder, 84, of Cobham. It was his first accident in more than half a century's driving.

Mr Wilder had no recollection of the accident.

PC Kirk told the coroner, Roger Hatch: "The reason for the accident may have been due to the low level of the sun. I was dazzled by it.

"It is possible Mr Wilder steered to the right when hitting a kerb."

Neither car was speeding, according to witnesses.

Retired trauma surgeon Graham Cook, told the coroner: "This is a notoriously bad stretch of road and is very dangerous.

"I feel quite strongly something should be done about it."

The coroner recorded Mrs Wilkinson's death as accidental.
